New CJN Kekere-Ekun Breaks Silence After Being Sworn in, Reveals Actions to Take

The newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun, has pledged to tackle the shortcomings within the judiciary head-on.

She has vowed to work collaboratively with fellow justices to drive meaningful change.

Speaking after her inauguration, Justice Kekere-Ekun acknowledged the pressing concerns surrounding appointments within the judiciary, an issue she promised to address promptly.

Her comments come amidst controversy surrounding her own appointment, with the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) questioning her suitability for the role due to her involvement in the contentious 2019 Imo State gubernatorial election judgment.

HURIWA had also raised concerns about Justice Kekere-Ekun’s integrity, citing unresolved allegations of failure to declare her assets as required by law, and criticized the Code of Conduct Bureau for not pursuing an investigation.

Furthermore, the association suggested that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s elevation to CJN may have been influenced by political backing from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
