National Election in Bangladesh: Public ServiceGuarding the Vote and Waging War Against Corruption — Strong Messages from Two Leaders on the Campaign Trail

By Correspondent, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Ahead of Bangladesh’s national parliamentary election, BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has called on citizens to guard polling stations and carefully verify vote counts. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has warned of strict action against corrupt individuals. Their statements on the campaign trail reflect the rising political heat surrounding the upcoming vote.

On Monday, virtually addressing a BNP election rally in Hatiya, Noakhali, Tarique Rahman said, “It is not enough to just cast your vote and leave. You must stay at the polling center to ensure that the vote count is properly verified.” He alleged that there are conspiracies to obstruct the 13th National Parliamentary Election and urged everyone to remain vigilant.

He further said that the people’s voting rights and freedom of expression had once been taken away, and those responsible had left the country. However, he claimed that certain groups are again attempting to sabotage the election. He called on party leaders, activists, and voters to guard polling centers on voting day, February 12.

On the same day in the evening, addressing an election rally at Wazir Ali High School field in Jhenaidah district, Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that if his party comes to power, corrupt individuals would be dealt with strictly. He vowed to transform the country over the next five years and build a corruption-free Bangladesh.

Addressing unemployed youth, he said, “We do not want to insult you by giving unemployment allowances. We want to create jobs.” Declaring war on corruption, he said that 11 parties together would show a red card to corruption.

Warning extortionists, he said, “People earn their livelihoods with great hardship, and you go and demand extortion. Instead of extorting, go and beg.”

He added that their goal is to build a united Bangladesh, not a divided one, and expressed hope for another revolution on February 12, 2026.
