An Area Court in Jos on Thursday, sentenced a 40-year-old man, Mayowa Okunlola, to three months imprisonment for defrauding a businessman of N280,000.
The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the crime of breach of trust and deceit and begged the court for leniency.
The judge gave the convict an option of N 15,000 fine or three months’ imprisonment and asked him to pay the sum of N285,000 as compensation to the complainant or six months’ imprisonment in default.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp Monday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported at the ‘C’ Division Police station on Feb. 6 by Mr Boniface Asika.
He said the convict begged the complainant to loan him the sum of N280,000 to fix his vehicle with a promise to return the money within four weeks.
The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation the convict confessed to have converted the amount to his personal use and failed to pay as promised.
The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
