Kano High Court orders state electoral commission to go ahead with LG election

The Kano State High Court has overturned a Federal High Court order, allowing the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to proceed with Local Government Area (LGA) elections scheduled for Saturday.

The decision comes just one day after Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court blocked the elections, citing alleged partisan ties of KANSIEC’s executive members to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

On Friday, Justice Sanusi Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court issued a contrary ruling, directing KANSIEC to move forward with the election as planned.

Justice Ma’aji challenged the federal court’s decision and stressed that KANSIEC has the authority to conduct the local government polls.

The conflicting judgments have created legal uncertainty just hours before the polls are set to commence.
