Kano communities beg Deputy Senate President to investigate abandoned road project

Communities along Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi road in Kano State have called on the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin to investigate contractors handling the dualisation of the Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi road project which was abandoned.

Recall that the Federal Government had on Thursday, 11th June, 2021 flagged off the construction of a dual carriageway from Kano to Dayi town in Katsina State awarded at the cost of N62.7 billion.

The road with a total length of 82.3Km was awarded to ease transportation stress within the axis and enhance movement of farm produce from rural areas to markets.

One of the community leaders, Abdullahi Kanye in an interview with DAILY POST on Friday in Kanye village, Gwarzo local government area of Kano State, wondered why the contractor abandoned the project halfway.

Kanye said the call was necessary to find out reasons why the contractor abandoned the work.

“We still remember when the former Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Dr. Babangida Husaini said at the flag-off that the road would be completed within 24 months. This is August and two months behind schedule,” Kanye said.

According to him, the communities living along the road were extremely happy with Senator Jibrin because the project was part of his campaign promises.

“As I am talking to you now, flooding has washed away some parts of the road and the contractor’s equipment is not on site.

“We want the Deputy Senate President who is representing Kano North to visit the site to inspect the level of work done by the contractor.

The communities, however, called on the Federal Government to ensure completion of the dualization of the road which linked Kano with four other states and Niger Republic, to boost socio-economic activities across the four states and beyond.

The road was initially constructed during the administration of military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and had never witnessed any major rehabilitation or reconstruction until now.
