Impeachment: Oyo CJ constitutes 7-man committee to investigate Deputy Governor, Olaniyan

The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Munta Ladipo Abimbola, has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the allegations levied against the Deputy Governor of the state, Engineer Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan.

Information gathered states that the constitution of the committee was sequel to the order given to the Chief Judge by the state House of Assembly.

The state lawmakers had a few days ago mandated the CJ to constitute a committee to look at the allegations levied against the deputy governor which bothered on insubordination, financial recklessness, and abuse of office among others.

Newsmen also learnt that the state High Court, under the leadership of Justice Ladiran Akintola, had yesterday ordered the state House of Assembly to go ahead with the impeachment process against Olaniyan.

The CJ on Thursday constituted the 7-man investigating panel.

The CJ in a statement signed by Udoh Comfort, Information Officer, High Court of Justice, Ibadan, added that the action was pursuant to the resolution of the House of Assembly of Oyo State, and as requested by the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin.

Udoh in the statement made available to Newsmen on Friday maintained that the action was taken in line with section 188 (5) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The statement said that members of the committee were drawn from various communities in the state.

The communities are the Muslim community, Christian community, Justice of Peace (JP) and the legal profession.

The committee members according to the CJ are Chief Kayode Christopher (Chairman), Arc. Adebisi Soyombo, Chief Lawal Adekunle Dauda, Princess Olanike Olusegun, Rev Fr. Patrick Ademola, Chief Mrs Wuraola Adepoju (JP) and Alh. Tirimisiyu Akewusola Badmus.

The CJ said that members of the committee were selected because they were found worthy to be men of unquestionable integrity.

“After various consultation with communities in the state such as Muslim community, Christian community, Justice of peace (JP) and legal profession, Chief Kayode Christopher (chairman), Arc. Adebisi Soyombo, Chief Lawal Adekunle Dauda, Princess Olanike Olusegun, Rev Fr. Patrick Ademola, Chief Mrs Wuraola Adepoju (JP), Alh. Tirimisiyu Akewusola Badmus having being found worthy to be men of unquestionable integrity, not being members of any public service, legislative house or political parties have been constituted to investigate the allegations against the deputy governor as provided under section 188(5) of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
