Illegal mining: Osun Assembly summons Environment, Sanitation Ministry

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye has directed that the officials of the Osun State Ministry of Environment and Sanitation appear before it to explain steps being taken to tackle the activities of illegal miners operating in the State.

The Coordinating Director of the Ministry is to honour the summon on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

He is to give report of Mining Companies operating in the State to the Assembly.

The directive became imperative after a motion on Matters of Public Importance moved by Benjamin Ogundipe, the Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Sanitation on the floor of the Assembly on Wednesday.

Ogundipe had raised a Point of Order into the activities of Illegal miners operating along the Osogbo-Iwo road and the dangers it posed for motorists plying the route.

The House Committee Chairman noted that the activities of the illegal miners was becoming worrisome for the State, as they have indiscriminately dug 7 metre holes along the road.

While observing that the act was very dangerous to the environment, he called on the supervising ministry to take necessary action on the matter, with a view to finding a lasting solution to it.
