Ibadan, Savannah, Warri, Etiti – List of new 31 states proposed by House of Reps

Lawmakers of the House of Representatives on Thursday, February 6, announced the proposal of the creation of 31 new states across the country.

If the proposal is approved, Nigeria will have 67 sub-national governments. Currently, the country consists of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The lawmakers who are members of the the Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution said it received a proposal from the states’ creation across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

The committee contained this in a letter to the House of Representatives, which was read during plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary session in Abuja.

According to the committee, it is proposing an additional six new states in the North Central, four in the North East, five in the North West, five in the South-South, and seven in the South West.

The states considered for creation include:

  4. Benue Ala (Benue
  5. Apa (Benue)
  6. FCT State
  7. Amana (Adamawa)
  8. Katagum (Bauchi)
  9. Katagum (Bauchi)
  10. Savannah (Borno)
  11. Muri (Taraba)
  12. New Kaduna state (Kaduna)
  13. Gujarat states (Kaduna)
  14. Tiga (Kano)
  15. Ari from Kano
  16. Kainji (Kebbi state)
  17. Etiti (Southeast)
  18. Orashi (Southeast)
