I was thinking you’ll be sacked – Neville tells Mikel Arteta

Former Manchester United star, Gary Neville has said that he did not expect Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta to retain his job after last season.

Arsenal have failed to finish top four in the past six seasons and were fifth in the 2021-22 season.

The Gunners collapsed late in the season, handing the final Champions League spot to north London rivals Tottenham.

They were beaten 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 12 and this result jeopardised their chances of finishing top four.

Arsenal went on to lose to Newcastle and won the next at Everton but it was not enough to topple Tottenham.

“I’ve always had a respect for Arsenal as a football club,” Neville told The Overlap.

“They’re one of the great traditional clubs in this country. However, the last few years has been a struggle.

“I remember at the end of last season, me and Jamie Carragher thought that it could be terminal for Mikel Arteta.”
