Girl, 11, dies of alleged torture in Plateau

The death of an 11-year-old girl, Margareth, has been attributed to the trauma of wounds sustained as a result of torture at the hands of her guardian.

The girl, confirmed dead at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), reportedly had wounds on both sides of her buttocks and back, which were left untreated until they became infected leading to health complications.

A source told news correspondent that the deceased was neglected by her guardian in spite of the wounds she sustained until she was eventually helped by a neighbour who took her to a private hospital in Vom for the treatment of her wounds. Following the infection of the injury, the girl was referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where she eventually died.

According to the source, the police subsequently arrested her guardian, Mrs Nnemeka Nwachukwu who was alleged to have inflicted the wounds on the child.

The Plateau State director of the National Human Right Commission (NHRC), Mrs Grace Pam, who reportedly confirmed the incident disclosed that the victim was trafficked from Kebbi State and handed over to her guardian in Jos as a housemaid.

DSP Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Plateau State Command, while confirming the incident, explained that the case is under investigation and assured that the woman involved has been transferred to the state CID for a thorough investigation and eventual prosecution.
