The Governing Council of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) has approved the promotion of five academic staff to the rank of Associate Professor (Reader) and sanctioned two staff members over separate cases of misconduct.
The decisions were reached at the Council’s 32nd meeting held on June 23, 2026, following recommendations from External Assessors, the Senior Staff Appointments and Promotions Committee (SSAPC), and the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC).
The university disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its Head of Information and Public Relations, Jamilu Magaji.
According to the statement, the newly promoted academics are drawn from the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. They include Dr. Aliyu Hamza Balarabe of the Department of Ophthalmology, who is also the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, alongside Dr. Ibrahim Abdulkadir of Haematology, Dr. Ashiru Ladan Argungu of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Monsidu Kehinde Fasasi of Ophthalmology, and Dr. Garba Umar Kangiwa of Ophthalmology.
In a separate decision, the Governing Council approved the dismissal of the university’s former Acting Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Isah Yusuf Tsafe, after finding him guilty of gross misconduct, negligence, and failure to account for university assets under his custody.
The statement said the council acted on the recommendations of the SSDC, which found that several ICT assets went missing while under Tsafe’s supervision.
The council also directed the university management to recover or surcharge the value of all outstanding university property linked to the case.
Similarly, the council approved the demotion of an ICT staff member, Abdullahi Mohammed Adamu, by one grade level and barred him from promotion for five years.
According to the statement, the disciplinary committee found that Adamu engaged in financial transactions with parents of admission seekers and participated in admission-related activities despite not being a member of the university’s Admissions Unit.
The Governing Council reaffirmed its commitment to merit, accountability and discipline, stressing that acts of misconduct would continue to attract appropriate sanctions regardless of the position of those involved.
