The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will henceforth apprehend motorcycles plying highways in Katsina State.
The Sector Commander, Mr Ali Sule-Tanimu told newsmen on Thursday in Katsina that it was an offence to drive tricycles on highways.
“The use of tricycles and motorcycles on the highways is prohibited, when we see them, we will ensure that they are arrested and booked accordingly,” he said.
According to him, the tricycles have constituted nuisance to motorists using highways across the state.
He explained that tricycles and motorcycles were omly meant for transportation of passengers within communities, not on inter-state roads or between towns.
“We will continue to ensure that they don’t go beyond their limit to endanger passengers’ lives,” he added.
The sector commander said that the FRSC and other security agencies have constituted a joint patrol to address the problem, including overloading.
“The one that is annoying is when they carry passengers inside the boots; we will continue to arrest such drivers, ask them to drop the excess passengers and impound the vehicles.
“We will intensify enlightenment and engagement with stakeholders, as well as our operational activities to ensure that overloading becomes a thing of the past,” he said.
According to reports, some road users have been expressing concern over the way some tricyclists travel with passengers on highways in some parts of the state.
The problem is more noticeable along Katsina-Charanchi, and Malumfashi-Bakori-Funtua highways.
