The Federal Government, on Tuesday, declared Wednesday, May 1 as a public holiday in commemoration of Workers’ Day.
The holiday was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday.
Tunji-Ojo reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to fostering innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces.
He said the government was committed to prioritising citizen safety and well-being, particularly in the context of climate change.
“In alignment with this year’s theme, which focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, I wish to state that the Federal Government remains steadfast in its resolve to prioritise the safety and well-being of all citizens.
“Let me reaffirm Mr President’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development,” the minister said.
Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda while extending wishes for a joyous celebration to all workers.
Ahead of this year’s Workers’ Day, the labour unions have been agitation for an upward review of the minimum wage in the country.
While the Federal Government had set up a committee to come up with an acceptable new minimum wage, it is unlikely that the President would announce a new minimum wage as the committee has yet to conclude its work.
