FCT Sports Commission Bill passes second reading in Senate

A bill to establish the Federal Capital Territory Sports Commission has passed second reading in the Senate on Wednesday.

The proposed Commission is charged with the responsibility of developing sports and identifying talents in the ever-increasing residents of the Federal Capital Territory.

Sponsor of the bill, Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT while speaking on the general principles on the floor of the Senate said the establishment of the Commission will encourage young talents to go into a sports career.

The lawmaker urged Senators to consider passage of the bill, saying the Commission will raise the standard of performance in sports as well as promote cooperation with other sports bodies for healthy competitions.

He said: “The Commission is expected to organise, and assist financially the participation in sports at inter-state, national and international levels.

“Provide and maintain sports centres and facilities for the training of Nigerians as instructors and organisers of sports”.

He insisted that the Commission which will be the first of its kind in the territory will promote sports activities to international best practices in the areas of sports administration.

Others Senators who spoke pointed out the advantages of having the Sports Commission in FCT, while Senate President, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan referred the bill to Senate Committee on Sports to revert in four weeks.
