Farmer docked for alleged cheating

The police on Thursday arraigned a 28-year-old farmer, Amos Audu in an Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State over alleged cheating.

The police charged the defendant, whose house address was not given, with criminal breach of trust, cheating and misappropriation.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Esther Bishen, told the court that the complainant, one Bitrus Bulus, reported the matter on July 7.

Bishen said Bulus entrusted the sum of N505,000 with Audu for the purchase of timber for him, but Audu converted the sum to his personal use.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 296, 306 and 293 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the defence counsel, Victor Declan, prayed the court to grant him bail pursuant to Section 36(5) of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The Judge, George Gwani, thereafter granted bail to Audu in the sum of N200,000 and a surety in like sum and adjourned the matter until July 25 for hearing.
