Edo Gubernatorial Election Heats Up as APC Calls for Governor Obaseki’s Impeachment

The Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded the impeachment of Governor Godwin Obaseki over alleged inciting comments made in a viral video.

The video reportedly shows Obaseki threatening to lead a violent uprising if attacks on his party members continue.

In the video, Obaseki addresses a group of supporters, alleging that members of his party are being targeted.

He says, “We just kept quiet last Thursday, if they try what they tried last Thursday again, Nigeria will burn and I will lead it.”

Reacting, the APC has condemned Obaseki’s comments as a “descent into madness” that must be stopped to avoid anarchy and breakdown of law and order.

The APC’s Acting State Chairman, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, described Obaseki’s threat as “violent” and “reckless.”

He accused Obaseki of sponsoring extrajudicial killings in the state, citing the tragic incident of July 18, 2024, where a police orderly was shot dead.

Tenebe called on the State House of Assembly to condemn Obaseki’s comments and start his impeachment process, which he described as “overdue.”

The development comes as the Edo governorship election heats up.

Obaseki’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has Asue Ighodalo as its flagbearer The party faces a challenge from the APC’s Monday Okpebholo.

The election is scheduled to be held on September 11, 2024.
