Court remands unemployed for alleged illegal possession of gun

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of one unemployed Abubakar Grima, 34, for allegedly unlawfully possessing a gun.

The defendant, a resident of Ajah, Lagos State, is charged with conspiracy and illegal possession of a firearm.

The Magistrate, Mrs M. O. Joseph, did not take the defendant’s plea, but ordered that he should be kept at the Kirikiri Custodial Centre pending advice of Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Joseph adjourned the case until March 27 for mention.

The prosecutor, Insp Patricia Ojeh, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 2 on Babatunde Tandoh Street, Ajah, Lagos State.

Ojeh said that policemen on patrol demanded to search the defendant and eventually found a gun on him.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of the gun.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 298 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
