Cholera Outbreak: 9 People Confirmed Dead in Rivers

Nine people have been confirmed dead following a cholera outbreak in two local government areas of Rivers state.

The death of the individuals was confirmed by the commissioner for health in the state, Adaeze Oreh on Thursday, January 16.

Speaking in Port Harcourt Oreh said three people died in Andoni LGA while there were six fatalities in Akuku-Toru.

According to the commissioner, the casualties resulted from 41 suspected cases of the disease in two councils.

She said, “With the deepest sense of sympathy to victims of a suspected outbreak of acute watery diarrhoea caused by suspected cholera outbreak, because we, at the Ministry of Health, are yet to actually confirm that those deaths were from Cholera in Isiodun community of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“However, the symptoms of the cases reported are in keeping with the surveillance case definition of cholera,” Oreh said.
