A Kano High Court sitting in Miller Road has sentenced a Chinese national Frank Geng-Quangrong to death by hanging for killing his girlfriend in 2022 at her residence in Kano.
Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma‘aji in a ruling yesterday said the accused is guilty of the offence and is convicted and sentenced to death by hanging “till he breathes his last breath”.
The offence, according to the trial judge, contravened section 221(b) of the Penal Code Law. He dismissed the testimonies and evidence of the convict which he described as inconsistent.
The defendant counsel Muhammed Danazumi, in his submission, begged for mercy for the convict based on the provisions of section 313 of the Kano State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2019 on prerogative of mercy.
He said his client committed the offense in self-defence, noting that they will appeal the Judgement at the appropriate time.
However, Justice Ma‘aji urged mercy from the Kano State governor for the convict.
The state attorney-general and commissioner for justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, who reacted to the judgement, expressed satisfaction with it.
He said the matter has ended accordingly and justice has been gained for the deceased family.
In her remarks after the judgement, the mother of the deceased, Fatima Zubairu, said she had missed her lovely daughter who passed on in 2022.
Recall that Geng-Quangrong was arrested and remanded by the Nigeria Police Force for culpable homicide in September 2022 over the “murder” of his 22 year old girlfriend Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, at her residence in Janbulo quarters, Kumbotso LGA of Kano.
The convict in his testimonies said he spent millions of naira on her, and on the day the incident happened, the deceased stabbed him with a knife, and while he was trying to defend himself, she bit him on his arm and also injured his genital, noting that the incident occurred as a result of self defence.
