Benue: Armed herders kill 26 in separate attacks

No fewer than 26 persons have reportedly been killed by suspected armed herders in separate attacks in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to the Caretaker Chairman of the Local Government Council, Mr Henry Agba who spoke to reporters on phone in Makurdi on Tuesday, six operatives of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, BSCVGs and Livestock Guards constituted the casualty.

According to Mr Agba who spoke on phone, six personnel of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, BSCVGs and Livestock Guards who were the first casualty met their death at Mbabuande on Saturday in an ambush when they escorted families to go and bury their dead.

Mr Agba further said that 14 persons were killed on Sunday night around 11:00 pm, when the armed herdsmen attacked a community in Gyaluwa.

“On Monday, they attacked another village at Naka-Adoka road and killed several people. This happened when it was raining in Naka,” he stressed.

The local government chairman said six dead bodies have so far been recovered from the incident at Naka-Adoka road while those injured are receiving treatment in clinics in the area.

He said he has reported the matter to the police and the security adviser to the governor.

The state spokesperson of the state police command, SP Catherine Anene, when contacted said the State Police Commissioner, CP, Emmanuel Adesina, was returning from assessing the incident and promised to get back with details.
