Antonio Conte on Tuchel’s sack

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Antonio Conte has responded when asked about Chelsea’s sack of Thomas Tuchel at his post-match press conference following his side’s Champions League 2-0 win over Marseille on Wednesday night.

Recall that Chelsea, under the leadership of new chairman, Todd Boehly, sacked Tuchel on Wednesday morning after their Champions League 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.

Conte’s post-match press conference was dominated by questions relating to Richarlison’s match-winning performance but concluded with one journalist asking if he was ‘shocked’ by Tuchel’s sudden departure from Chelsea.

The Italian, however, declined the opportunity to express sympathy for Tuchel.

The Spurs boss said, “Honestly, I don’t want to be disrespectful. I think when another club takes a decision, I think it is right to not make a comment because you don’t know what happened.”

Conte, who suffered a similar fate when his two-year reign at Chelsea was brought to an end by Roman Abramovich just two months after winning the FA Cup in 2018, shared a frosty relationship with Tuchel.

Conte and Tuchel were embroiled in numerous spats at Stamford Bridge this season.

Both managers were fined, while Tuchel was handed a one-match touchline ban after they clashed twice this season during a Premier League derby 2-2 draw which ended with a now iconic handshake.

Meanwhile, Brighton’s Graham Potter is the heavy favourite to take over from Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
