After Primary Defeat; APC Suspends Senator Echocho Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Odu Ward 2 of Dekina Local Government Area, Kogi State, has suspended Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho, representing Kogi East Senatorial District, over alleged anti-party activities, barely days after his defeat at the party’s primary election.

The suspension, which political observers describe as a major development in Kogi East politics, followed a resolution reached by the Ward Executive Committee during its meeting held on May 26, 2026.

In a suspension letter signed by the Ward Chairman, Shaibu Mohammed; Secretary, Kabiru Mohammed; and other executive members, the APC accused Senator Echocho of engaging in activities capable of undermining the unity and stability of the party after losing his re-election bid at the APC primary.

According to the ward executives, the Senator allegedly held meetings and consultations with opposition figures while also exploring plans to defect from the APC following what party leaders described as his “rejection by the party and the people” over an alleged third-term ambition.

The letter stated that the party could no longer tolerate actions considered detrimental to its electoral strength and internal cohesion in Kogi East.

The Ward EXCO further accused Echocho of consistently working against the interests of the APC despite benefiting from the platform for eight years as Senator representing the district.

Party officials also alleged that the Senator failed to deliver his polling unit during the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections and did not provide the expected leadership during critical political contests in the state.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the suspension was announced, APC chieftain, Mallam Nasiru Musa, said the decision became necessary to protect the integrity and future of the party in the area.

“After his defeat at the APC primary election, Senator Echocho’s actions became more troubling and openly confrontational to the party. The APC cannot continue to accommodate individuals who work against its collective interest simply because their personal ambitions were not realized,” Musa said.

He added that the Senator’s representation over the past eight years had failed to meet the expectations of many constituents across Kogi East.

Stakeholders and party faithful in the district commended the Ward Executive Committee for what they described as a courageous move aimed at preserving discipline, loyalty, and unity within the APC.

The suspension letter noted that the action would serve as a warning to party members whose conduct threatens the progress and electoral fortunes of the APC in Kogi State.
