Abia Lawmaker Emmanuel Emereuwa Dumps PDP For Labour Party, Cites Internal Crisis

Emmanuel Ihuoma Emereuwa, a member of the Abia State House of Assembly, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Labour Party (LP), citing deep divisions within his former party.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Emereuwa announced his defection and attached a copy of his resignation letter, dated March 12, 2025, which was received and endorsed by his PDP ward chairman on the same day.

“The reasons for my resignation are as stated in the letter, mainly predicated on the deep division and polarisation in the party from National to state levels,” he wrote.

The lawmaker explained that his decision was based on consultations with his constituents and his admiration for the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Otti.

“After due consultation with my constituents, and in recognition of the sterling performance of our dear governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, I have picked up the membership of the Labour Party and have now become a member of the Labour Party,” he stated.

He urged the House leadership to recognise his new party status.

“I, therefore, wish to be accorded recognition going forward as a member of the Labour Party,” Emereuwa added.

His defection is the latest in a series of political realignments in Abia State, with more lawmakers reportedly considering similar moves.
