THE STATEMENT IN FULL
As we celebrate Democracy Day and commemorate 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria, the Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) extends warm greetings to all Nigerians and reaffirms our commitment to promoting democratic principles and good governance in our beloved country, especially in our immediate constituency of Kogi State.
The journey of democracy in Nigeria has been marked by triumphs and challenges, but through it all, we have remained steadfast in our collective pursuit of a better and more inclusive society. On this significant occasion, we recognize the sacrifices made by countless individuals who fought for democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
We call upon all stakeholders – government, civil society, the private sector, and the citizens – to recommit themselves to upholding democratic values and ethics for the betterment of our dear nation. Democracy is not just a system of governance; it is a way of life that ensures the protection of human rights, accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.
We urge all political leaders to prioritize the welfare and interests of the people above personal or party agendas. It is imperative that democratic institutions are strengthened, and the principles of checks and balances are upheld to prevent the abuse of power and ensure that the voices of the people are heard.
Furthermore, we call for the total adoption of democratic ethics at all levels of our society. This includes respect for diversity, tolerance, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence. It is only through these values that we can build a truly inclusive and prosperous nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.
On this auspicious occasion, let us reflect on the progress we have made as a nation and recommit ourselves to the ideals of democracy. Together, let us work towards a future where the rights and dignity of every Nigerian are respected, and where our democracy continues to flourish for generations to come.
Long live democracy!
Long live Nigeria!
Signed,
Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina
Chairperson, Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET).
