As the 2027 general elections draw near, the Bishop of Ogoja Diocese, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Ifeanyi Akunna, has urged Nigerians to make informed choices when electing their leaders, saying their decisions will shape the country’s future.
The bishop made the call in a statement issued by the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ogoja, Cross River State.
He said Nigerians must beware of politicians who remember the poor and grassroots communities only during election campaigns.
“As another election approaches, Nigerians must beware of politicians who suddenly remember the poor and the grassroots only during election campaigns.
“They come with bags of rice, food items, welfare packages and envelopes containing ₦5,000 or more, pretending to love the people,” he said.
Akunna stressed that genuine love for the people should be demonstrated through good governance rather than seasonal generosity.
He noted that many politicians abandon the people after winning elections, only to return four years later with bags of rice and cash to solicit their votes again.
“Nigerians, please be wiser! Do not trade your future and that of your children for temporary gratification. A bag of rice cannot guarantee four years of security, quality education, healthcare, employment opportunities, economic development, constant electricity and good governance,” he cautioned.
Quoting Proverbs 29:2, the bishop said: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”
He also cited Exodus 18:21, which encourages the selection of capable leaders who fear God, are truthful and reject dishonest gain.
Further quoting Proverbs 14:34, the bishop reminded Nigerians that “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
He urged voters to prayerfully and carefully examine the character, competence, integrity and track records of candidates seeking political offices ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, Nigeria deserves leaders who will serve the people throughout their tenure, rather than politicians who remember them only during election campaigns.
“Good governance is your right, not a favour. Your vote is your voice. Use it wisely,” Akunna said.
He prayed that God would grant Nigerians the wisdom to make righteous choices and raise leaders after His own heart.
