260 cases of rights abuses, rape, others recorded in Yobe

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said it recorded at least 260 cases of rape and human rights abuses in the last 12 months in Yobe State.

The coordinator of the commission in Yobe State, Labaran Babangida, said this while briefing newsmen on the commemoration of the 2023 International Human Rights Day and 16 Days Activism against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence held in Damaturu, the state capital.

He said most of the cases are rape, violent abuse between husbands and their wives, misunderstanding, and failure of husbands to meet their financial obligations.

“We have a backlog of 260 complaints, but more than 200 of these complaints centred on the aspect of violations of women and girls rights”, he said.

On the level of conviction, the state coordinator noted that the bulk responsibility of prosecution and conviction centred on the government. Therefore, some gaps need to be covered for proper convictions.

“For instance, judiciary is the large benchmark where litigations always take place and there are gaps that are existing in it as such government should cover those gap to ensure that justice is done”, Babangida added.
