DG DSS Yusuf Magaji Bichi: reports for work and spells out vision

Yusuf Magaji Bichi, the new director-general of Department of State Services(DSS) reported for work today at the headquarters to take control of the secret agency.

Peter Afunanya, spokesman of the agency said Bichi addressed the management and called for members’ support.

“While calling for stronger ties among the staff, he pledged to work with them as a team. He stated that his vision is to build a well disciplined, professional and highly motivated DSS with particular reference to staff welfare”, Afunanya reported.

Bichi also affirmed that the Service will support government agenda on rebuilding the economy, stamping out insecurity and fighting corruption.

He enjoined the Staff to refocus their intelligence collection efforts in this direction.

Similarly, he implored the management to ensure that the Service respects rule of law and human rights.

President Buhari on 13 September announced the appointment of Bichi as the substantive Director General of the Service. The agency had been under the headship of Matthew Seiyefa since 7 August, when the former DG, Lawal Daura was sacked by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for sending DSS operatives to mount a blockade of the National Assembly. The action was ruled as illegal and unauthorised.

“He is an astute and versatile administrator; a highly detribalised Nigerian and an Intelligence Officer of immense repute”, said Afunanya.

His exciting career in the Service spanned a period of 35 years during which he served in different Commands and Formations.

“He indeed possesses a high level experience and exposure that will no doubt reposition and make the Service one that Nigerians and personnel will be proud of”, Afunanya added in a statement Friday..

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa has denied receiving any petition on a Nigerian detained by the United States, U.S, authority.

Dabiri-Erewa gave the explanation through her Media Aide, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Dabiri-Erewa said the attention of the Office of the Presidential Aide had been drawn to an online publication about a Nigerian detained in the U. S.

She said the publication entitled “Family of US detained Nigerian man cries out, seeks FG’s intervention,” was false.

NAN recalls that an online medium had reported that Mr Olufolajimi Abegunde, a Nigerian resident in Atlanta, Georgia was detained by the U. S. authority since February.

He was accused of harbouring a friend who was allegedly involved in a questionable financial transaction.

The report added that the detained Nigerian had sought the federal government’s intervention.

Dabiri-Erewa, however, said that the report was false as no correspondence was received by her on the issue.

”We have checked our records and there is no such letter ever received in our office as the Commission has not even been set up as at the time the said petition was reportedly submitted.

”Secondly, all the line of communication is open for any public complaint which we respond to as soon as practicable.

”The complainant or any other aggrieved Nigerian is advised to officially channel the communication to the Secretary or Secretariat of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission,” she said.

She said that the commission could not treat any issue based on an online report.

Dabiri-Erewa instructed that all petitions should be channelled through ssa@diaspora.gov.ng or submitted at the office or call +2348174383962.

2019: PENGASSAN re-echoes need for issue-based campaign

Mr Olabode Johnson, President, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has re-echoed the need for political parties to ensure issue-based campaign for the 2019 elections.

Johnson made the appeal at the 1st Triennial Delegate Conference of PENGASSAN and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Retail branch in Abuja, on Wednesday.

“Campaigns should be issued-based for the purpose of convincing the electorate of the capacity of the political party,’’ he said

He commended the effort of leaders of the National Peace Committee for the signing of peace agreement among the presidential candidates.

According to him, the unity and peace of the country should be paramount for everyone.

“As we approach the 2019, I commend the efforts and leadership of the former head of state, General Abdusalami Abubakar (Rtd) for the initiative.

“We call on the presidential candidates to adhere to the terms of the signed agreement, while other politicians should desist from overheating the polity,’’ he said

Johnson further urged politicians to also avoid any form of hate speech or actions capable of creating divisiveness.

30 year old dispute resolved via ADR in Lagos

Lagos Chief Judge Opeyemi Oke: Lagos ADR resolves 30 year-old dispute

Lagos Chief Judge Opeyemi Oke: Lagos ADR resolves 30 year-old dispute

Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, said that a 30-year-old court case between two brothers was settled through mediation via the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse (LMDC) or Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR)

She did not give details about the brothers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oke disclosed this at the 2018 LMDC Neutrals Dinner held at Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday evening.

NAN reports that Lagos Settlement Week (LSW) is set aside by the state Chief Judge when disputants have opportunity to have their cases resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at no cost.

ADR, as used in law, is a way of resolving disputes between two or more parties with concrete effects. Typically, a third party, the mediator, assists the parties to negotiate a settlement.

The chief judge, during her speech at the neutrals (mediators) dinner, applauded the effects of LSW programme on the court dockets of Lagos State Judiciary.

“I applaud LMDC for the lives and families you save through the cases settled.

“I was informed of the December LSW programme, a 30-year-old court case was settled. This is the excellence we seek,” Oke said.

The chief judge also said although statistics vary, between 60 per cent and 80 per cent of cases referred to ADR were successfully resolved.

In her opening remark, the Acting Chairman of LMDC, Justice J. E. Oyefeso, said that Lagos judiciary was working hard to reposition LMDC to achieve greater results in 2019.

She said that ADR has helped to restore relationships between parties, adding that it has reduced dockets of cases in the courts.

Mrs Adeyinka Aroyewun, Director, Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse, said that LMDC would introduce new ideas in 2019 to accelerate mediation cases in the state.

She said that LMDC would organise more training for mediators to ensure specialisation among mediators so that mediators would only mediate on cases they specialised in.

She also said that efforts would be made to minimise factors responsible in low settlement of cases in mediation by introducing continuous assessment and evaluation of mediators.

“We will henceforth appoint mediators to handle cases in their areas of specialty.

“Age, tribe, religion and experience of every mediator will be taken into cognisance before a mediator is appointed.

“Also, number of cases in the dockets of a mediator will be considered before such mediator will be giving more case to handle,” Aroyewun said.
