“Your inaction on Nnamdi Kanu is a clear betrayal” – Ohanaeze blasts southeast Governors

Governors in the southeast region have been accused of ‘intentional negligence’ over the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The accusation was made by the southeast’s foremost socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

In a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group’s Secretary General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo said:

This lack of action is not merely an oversight; it is a deliberate betrayal of the Igbo people’s trust and hope. At this critical time, we must address both the nature of this betrayal and the potential consequences it may bring.

On July 2, 2024, at the Lion Building in Enugu Government House, Southeast Governors met with esteemed leaders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.

During this meeting, the Governors publicly pledged to advocate for Nnamdi Kanu’s release and committed to engaging with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on this urgent issue. Yet, four months have passed, and the Governors have failed to deliver on their promise.

The group stated that Kanu’s prolonged detention stems not only from local political dynamics but “from complex international interests supported by local collaborators.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo further proposed a strategic approach to advocate for Kanu’s immediate release, which includes mobilizing international influence, engaging traditional leadership and ceasefire among agitation groups.

“It must be stated clearly: the Southeast Governors’ ongoing inaction signifies an unforgivable disregard for Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters.

“The reluctance of some Igbo traditional leaders and clerics to support Kanu during crucial moments also raises questions about their dedication to the cause. Were their appearances in court merely performative, lacking genuine commitment?

“We urge the Southeast Governors to consider the consequences of their negligence. The well-being of our leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and the integrity of governance depend on decisive and responsible actions.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains unwavering in our pursuit of justice, and we will not rest until Nnamdi Kanu is free. We call upon all members of the Ndigbo community to stay vigilant and active, ensuring that our collective demand for justice is met,” the group concluded.
