The era of Walid Regragui as head coach of the Morocco national football team has officially come to an end after he stepped down following negotiations with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
Both parties mutually agreed to terminate their cooperation, bringing to a close one of the most historic chapters in Moroccan football.
Regragui secured his place in both national and global football history by guiding Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
His side became the first African and Arab nation to reach that stage of the competition, a landmark achievement that resonated far beyond the country’s borders.
However, more recent performances, particularly at the Africa Cup of Nations, are understood to have influenced the federation’s decision to move in a new direction ahead of the next international cycle.
In a statement, the federation thanked Regragui for his significant contribution to the development of Moroccan football and for the unforgettable moments delivered to supporters during his tenure.
His successor, who will oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup, has not yet been named.
Morocco are scheduled to participate in this summer’s World Cup tournament, where they are set to face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti in the group stage.
Separately, Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi is currently awaiting a court verdict in an ongoing legal case in France related to rape charges, which he has denied.
