The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) is facing security challenges as yet-to-be-identified gunmen reportedly invaded the off-campus student apartments in Gandu, a neighbouring community of its permanent site in Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving students in fear and calling for improved security measures.
The gunmen targeted about three lodges, robbing students of their valuables, including money, phones, laptops, and other items.
The victims, who confirmed the incident, expressed concern over the rising crime in Gandu, an area where many students and university staff reside.
Isa, one of the victims, highlighted the need for enhanced security in Gandu and other neighbouring areas, stating that the community has witnessed an increase in crime, making students and other residents vulnerable to kidnappings and armed robberies.
Another victim, Naomi, recounted how the assailants broke into their rooms at approximately 3am, making away with phones and other belongings.
According to report, in response to the escalating security concerns around tertiary institutions in the state, security agencies have announced plans to introduce “Stop and Search” points across tertiary institutions in the state.
The decision was made during an expanded security meeting held at the Government House in Lafia, where stakeholders discussed strategies to address the growing menace of banditry and kidnappings in Nasarawa State.
The introduction of “Stop and Search” points is expected to enhance security checks and deter criminal activities within and around educational institutions.
