Teachers Recruitment: Kaduna SUBEB shortlists 27,639 for oral interview

Published

on

The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has shortlisted 27,639 applicants for oral interview in its ongoing recruitment of 25,000 teachers for the state’s public primary schools.

The figure represents the number of successful applicants out of the more than 43,000 who sat for the aptitude test conducted on Dec. 20, 2017.

The list, pasted at the board’s headquarters in Kaduna on Saturday evening, indicated that oral interview would start on Jan. 24, at the Local Government Education Authority (LEA) offices in the 23 local government areas of the state.

Signed by the board’s Executive Chairman, Malam Nasiru Umar, the list added that successful candidates would attend the interview in their respective local governments, while applicants from other states would be interviewed at centres nearest to them.

Applicants are advised to check their names at the notice board of the Education Secretaries in the 23 local governments, as well as SUBEB headquarters.

The recruitment is being conducted to replace the 21,780 primary school teachers sacked for allegedly failing competency test organised by the state
government in June 2017.

The sack of the teachers over poor performance generated protest and strike by Nigeria Union of Teachers on Jan. 8.

The strike was, however, called off after 10 days when the state government announced a second chance window for the sacked teachers to reapply under SUBEB’s continues recruitment exercise.

ASUP strike justifiable – Shehu Sani

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has pointed out that the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, is justified.

He made the statement on his Twitter handle in response to the indefinite strike embarked upon by the union recently.

Senator Sani said, “The strike embarked upon by the polytechnic lecturers under ASUP is justified.”

He further explained that the demands put in place by the lecturers are reasonable, adding that persistent strikes in the country are caused by breaches of agreements met between the government and the unions.

“The demands of the lecturers are reasonable and rational. Incessant strikes results from incessant breaches,” he said.

The Senator called on the Nigerian government to respect and honour agreements between it and labour unions.

“The Federal Government should honour the agreement reached,” he stressed.

Recall that ASUP embarked on an indefinite strike Wednesday due to Nigerian government’s inability to meet set of agreements between the two parties.

It also accused the Federal Government and the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu of being insensitive to their plight.

New Retirement Age Set for Teachers by NUT

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has submitted a new retirement age proposal to the Ministry of Education and the National Assembly for approval, education minister Adamu Adamu has confirmed.

He said that the drive was based on the need for better performance by teachers and the desire to have quality teachers in the nation’s schools.

“Nigerian teachers to some extent require a reasonable retirement age like their counterparts in India, Canada, Belgium that have increased the retirement age for teachers to 65 years.

“We are appealing to the House to approve the bill because the ministry is in support of increasing the retirement age of teachers,” the minister added.

The minister is supporting the increase of the retirement age for teachers from 60 years to 65 years to allow for further improvement in the standard of basic and secondary education in the country.

Adamu said at a public hearing on the need to insulate teachers from the retirement age for public servants organized by the House joint Committee on Basic Education and Public Service.

Speaking at the hearing, Chairman House Committee on Basic Education, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, also confirmed that the bill was being considered for passage.

“Teachers are the bedrock of any nation and as such their wealth of experience must be tapped to enhance the wellbeing of society.

“How long should we tap that knowledge legitimately in the school system is the question we except to answer today?” Mohammed said.

The House committee, he said, was also considering to amend the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria to strengthen its regulatory powers to promote professionalism and eradicate quacks.

Kaduna Polytechnic joins ASUP strike

The Kaduna Polytechnic Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), has complied with the indefinite strike declared by the national body on Wednesday.

ASUP Chairman in the polytechnic, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the chapter totally complied with the directive of the national body.

“We will remain on strike until directed otherwise by our national executives,” Ibrahim said.

NAN reports that the polytechnic was on break and was expected to resume academic activities in January.

Michael John, a student of the polytechnic, who spoke to NAN on the development appealed to the federal government to dialogue with union and resolve all disagreements.

“We do not want to stay at home like our fellow students in the universities who have been at home for months following ASUU strike.

“Federal Government should please find a way to resolve the issues, so we will resume school in January and continue our studies,” John said.

Kola Adeyemi, who applied for admission in the school also called on both parties to go to the negotiation table and iron things out.

“I have stayed at home for quite too long and hoping to secure admission in Kaduna Polytechnic.

“The strike, if prolonged will affect my chance of securing admission this session,” he said.

Mr Usman Dutse, the National President of the union, had on Tuesday directed all members of the union to embark on the nation-wide indefinite strike on Wednesday.

Dutse said that the strike became necessary following the failure of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 and 2017 agreements reached with the union.
