Tanker explosion claims four lives, destroys bank buildings, properties in Delta

A tragic petrol tanker explosion in Agbor, Ika South Council of Delta State, has left four people dead and caused extensive damage to properties, including two bank buildings.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a 33,000-litre tanker, laden with petrol, overturned while attempting a turn on the busy Old Lagos/Asaba Road. Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker fell near First Bank, sparking a massive explosion.

The fire quickly spread, engulfing nearby houses, vehicles, and businesses. Residents struggled to contain the flames in the absence of immediate firefighting support.

An eyewitness recounted, “The tanker fell while trying to make a turn. Four people have been confirmed dead, and properties, including two banks, were destroyed in the inferno.”

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described the incident as horrifying and directed state agencies to provide immediate support to affected victims.

He commended the efforts of residents, the fire service, and security agencies who worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire and assist those impacted.

Three other individuals sustained injuries, reportedly caused by the tanker’s brake failure. Emergency teams have since been deployed to manage the aftermath of the tragedy.

Governor Oborevwori also urged the Ministry of Health and the State Emergency Management Agency to ensure that all injured persons receive prompt medical attention.
