Starlink launched on a trial basis in Bangladesh

By Mahbub Hasan Tutul,Dhaka Correspondent

Starlink’s service has been launched on a trial basis in Bangladesh. Starlink’s internet service was launched on a trial basis at the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital on Wednesday morning.

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) granted investment registration to Starlink on March 29. As a result, the company will be able to start operations within 90 working days. However, to launch internet services commercially, it will have to obtain an NGSO license from the Bangladesh

Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The licensing process has already been approved.
BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud said, “We have given them permission to operate within 90 days. Starlink’s technology has been positively verified.”

Starlink’s technology was originally tested for the first time in Bangladesh in July 2023. Then, after the current interim government took office, the matter was further accelerated.

Professor Muhammad Yunus discussed Starlink with American entrepreneur and technologist Elon Musk on a video call on February 13. This further accelerated the process of launching Starlink services. After that, several test activities were conducted in Dhaka last month.

On the other hand, technology analysts believe that a new era will begin with their trial journey in Bangladesh. Because Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is already providing high-speed internet services through satellites in many countries around the world.

Accordingly, if it is launched, high-speed internet will be easily available in remote areas of Bangladesh and the digital divide between cities and villages will be reduced. At the same time, they also believe that Starlink’s effectiveness will play an important role in establishing emergency communications during disasters.

Incidentally, Starlink services were launched commercially in Bhutan for the first time in South Asia this year.
