Head coach of the South Africa women’s national team, Desire Ellis has revealed the game plan that saw her team beat Nigeria 2-1 in their opening fixture at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
According to Ellis, they set out to stop the Super Falcons from playing free-flowing football.
There were no goals in the first half, but Bayana Bayana clearly dominated the game.
Two quick-fire goals from Jermaine Seopesenwe and Hilda Magaia put the South Africans in front, before Rssheedat Ajibade netted a late consolation goal.
“We forced them to play long balls,” Ellis said after the game.
“We knew we can force them to make mistakes at the back which they did, the players deliver our plans.”
Nigeria will take one Botswana and Burundi in their last two fixtures of the group stage.
