Social media abuse: Kano to review Censorship Board existing laws

The Executive Secretary, Kano State Censorship Board, Alhaji Abba Almustapha has sought the cooperation of the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to curtail the rampant misuse of social media handles and production of anti-religious/cultural films in the State.

The Executive Secretary, who spoke on Saturday during a courtesy call on the State Attorney General, said there was urgent need for a review of the board’s 2019 amendment law.

He said the misuse of social media handles was becoming rampant, hence the need for including them in the law, like WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Tik tok, as well as Islamic singers.

Almustapha added that printers, games centers and photo laboratories should also be included in the proposed amendment.

Responding, the State Attorney General, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi assured that the government would review the Kano State Censorship Board Law.

He said the society’s norms and values were being tampered with.

Dederi added that the major responsibility of the Kano State Censorship Board was to ensure that films and other literary works were “produced according to our religion, culture and established law.”
