Simple Ways To Stay Healthy And Prevent Awful Vaginal Discharge

Published

on

Every female has a natural vaginal scent that can change throughout her menstrual cycle. A strong odor however, can be a sign of an infection, particularly if she is sexually active.

Not all vaginal odors are caused by an infection, However. For example, poor hygiene or tight fitting clothing or fabric that doesn’t breathe can cause sweat and bacteria to get trapped which can cause and unpleasant odor.

Don’t be fooled by products such as douches or sprays that claim to “clean” your vagina. They can be harmful because they remove the fluids that naturally clean your vagina. These products (particularly the scented ones) can actually cause irritation.

Simply use soap and water to clean the outside of your vaginal area.

Rinse well and pat your skin with a towel until it is dry before you put your underwear on.

If your vaginal odor doesn’t go away, make an appointment with your health care provider and get checked out. There is treatment available.

Showering every day with mild soap and warm water usually does the trick to feel clean and fresh in general.

If you have a vaginal discharge, itching, or vaginal odor, it may be caused by a change in the bacteria that normally live in the vagina (bacterial vaginosis) or by a yeast infection. Certain sexual transmitted infections (STI’s) such as trichomoniasis can cause a different odor.

A woman’s vagina is naturally filled with bacteria but when there is an overgrowth, the condition is called bacterial vaginosis and causes a “fishy” odor.

Causes of vaginal odor are a forgotten tampon left in the vagina or not showering or bathing regularly. However, vaginal discharge can mean that you have a sexually transmitted infection, especially if you are having unprotected intercourse. See your health care provider to find out what is causing your symptoms and if you need medication. If you do have an infection, there is medicine that can cure it and the odor too.

It’s especially important to talk to your health care provider if:

You’ve had unprotected intercourse
You have a “different” vaginal discharge or itching
The vaginal odor (smell) doesn’t go away

Most ladies have a normal wetness or discharge that naturally cleans and moistens the vagina, but it should NOT have an odor. It’s NOT okay to douche or use strong soaps, deodorants, or perfume sprays near your vagina because it can upset the balance of good bacteria that are normally found in your vagina. These types of products can cause an allergic reaction, and/or irritation, and removes the igood bacteria that are normally present.

FCTA expresses satisfaction over Yellow fever vaccination in Abuja

Published

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has expressed satisfaction with the successes recorded in the ongoing Yellow fever preventive mass vaccination campaign in Abuja.
The Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), FCT, Malam Adamu Bappah, said this while monitoring the exercise at some of the vaccination points within Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi and Karshi axis of the FCT on Wednesday.

Bappah said that the exercise was well conducted with large turnout of people, which he described as `very encouraging’.

The scribe, however, enjoined residents to ensure that they received the vaccination, particularly those between the ages of nine months and 44 years.
He stressed the need for the eradication of yellow fever epidemic, adding that three confirmed cases had been reported so far in the FCT.

“The vaccination will cover duration of two streams, which the first stream was from Nov. 24 to Nov. 29, covering 35 wards in the territory.

“The second stream is from Nov. 30 to Dec. 7 covering 27 wards,” he said.
He noted that school premises, places of worship and hospitals were centres used for the mass vaccination.

Why Nigerian doctors are leaving Nigeria—NMA

Published

on

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has attributed poor remuneration and inadequate health facilities as some of the major reasons for mass exodus of medical doctors.

Dr Ekpe Phillips, the FCT Chapter NMA Chairman, said this at the opening of the Annual Health Week of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Phillips described the pay package of doctors in Nigeria as poor, stressing the need for government to increase the remuneration of doctors to address the challenge.

He noted that many doctors who left the country to take up foreign appointment did so due to inadequate facilities among other factors.

He listed mass unemployment, lack of placement for residency faced by a high proportion of medical professionals in Nigeria as other factors.

Phillips said Nigeria is losing doctors to foreign countries, adding that Nigerian doctors are leaving the country for greener pastures and the workload is becoming too much on the doctors that stay.

“We hear doctors collapsing because the workload is too much because their colleagues have left to find a greener gesture.

“We have internal and international brain drain; Nigeria now has one doctor catering for 5,000 patients instead of one doctor to 600
patients.

“Brain drain is now becoming pandemic and sad news because government did not and still is not doing enough; there is no serious commitment to stemming this syndrome.

“Nigeria which was one of the richest 50 countries in the early 70s has metro greased to become one of the 25 poorest countries in the
World today,’’ he said.

Dr Michael Olarewaju, the President of Association of Residents Doctors, FCT chapter, said that brain drain was a massive problem to Nigeria’s health system.

He said that if the problem was not properly tackled in the next two to three years there would not be enough doctors to treat patients in the country.

He observed that initially the problem in the sector was strike by health workers “but now they are not going on strike but are exiting the country’’.

Having a big butt might just be a life-saver

Published

A new study suggests that people of a healthy weight but with more fat in their hips, thighs and legs could be at a lower risk of strokes, diabetes and heart attacks.

Findings published in the journal Cell Research show that a lack of fat in the lower half of the body corresponds with an increased risk of mortality and/or cardiovascular disease.

But the findings do not apply to those who are overweight. The reason being that fat levels around the lungs and hearts of overweight people might already be too high.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Norbert Stefan, a diabetes specialist and lead author of the study, said that it’s better for people to be pear shaped than apple shaped if they are a healthy weight, as the hips and thighs provide “safe storage” for fat.

This is because the extra weight in thighs and hips is different from the fat stored deeper in the abdomen. Abdominal fat is more likely to release fatty acids into the blood, which can lead to diabetes, insulin resistance and high cholesterol.

And with all that talk of apples, pears and bums, here’s a peach that’s got the internet seriously losing its cool.
