Scraping of TETFUND will be counter productive, says KOSU VC

The Vice Chancellor of Kogi State University, (KOSU), Kabba, Prof. Kehinde Eniola has urged the Federal Government to sustain the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, (TETFUND) because of it’s emmense contribution to the development of higher education in Nigeria.

The VC who stated this on Monday at a press conference, ahead of the matriculation of the second sets of students of the University, slated for Tuesday, noted that the federal government can review grants to lecturers for overseas training, but emphasized that the Infrastructural Development through TETFUND should be sustained.

According to him outright cancellation or phasing out of the TETFUND will be counter productive, saying ” you can see what TETFUND is doing in our tertiary institutions across the country. Removing it with not be good for the benefiting institutions.

“Government can review grants giving to lecturers for overseas training because of the abuse. Some will take the money and escape with it and never come back to Nigeria. This is the aspect that the government must check. But Infrastructural development in higher institutions by TETFUND should be sustained and improved upon.

Prof. Eniola also praise the federal government for the introduction of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), saying 750 students of the instruction have benefited from the loan fund.

While giving the breakdown of the beneficiaries of the fund, he said 101 students were captured in August, 2024, 326 in September 2024, 247 in November, 2024 while in January, 2025, 76 students were captured.

In order to solve the acute shortage of accommodation in the university, the VC said the construction of two blocks of hostel that will serve the students has reached advanced stage, noting that when completed, it will ease accommodation problems in the institution.

He added that the university is also working with some private estate developers to construct blocks of hostel accommodation for the students.

The VC thanked the State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for what he described as his unwavering commitment to the development and nurturing of the young university.

According to him, 1,060 students were given admission out of a total of over 3, 000 who choose the university as the institution of first choice.
