Recount of ballots ordered in Florida

Gillum, Democrats’ Governorship candidate in Florida : recount of ballots ordered

Gillum, Democrats’ Governorship candidate in Florida : recount of ballots ordered

The Florida secretary of state has ordered recounts in two riveting U.S. Senate and governor races, evoking memories of a similar move in 2000 to decide winner of US presidential election.

According to CBS News,Secretary Ken Detzner issued the order on Saturday after the unofficial results in both races fell within the margin that by law triggers a recount.

The unofficial results show that Republican former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis led Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by less than 0.5 percentage points, which will require a machine recount of ballots.

In the Senate race, Republican Gov. Rick Scott’s lead over Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson is less than 0.25 percentage points, which will require a hand recount of ballots from tabulation machines that couldn’t determine which candidate got the vote.

The ballot-counting issues are centered in Broward County and Palm Beach County, two populous counties that tend to vote Democratic.

On Friday, Scott won two lawsuits — one ordering the Palm Beach County elections supervisor to submit “over-voted” and “under-voted” absentee ballots to the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board for public review of each vote before they are counted.

Over-votes are ballots in which the machines read that the voter may have selected more than one candidate, and under-votes occur when the machine does not register a vote on the ballot.

The other lawsuit ordered the Broward County elections supervisor to release records of voter information.

Scott and President Trump have claimed without offering evidence that Democrats are tampering with the election. Mr. Trump wrote a tweet Saturday afternoon that seemed to allude to the recount, saying: “Trying to STEAL two big elections in Florida! We are watching closely!”

How the candidates stand:

Senate:
Bill Nelson 4,085,545
Rick Scott 4,098,107

Governor
Andrew Gillum 4,042,195
Ron DeSantis 4,075,879

Agric commissioner
Nikki Fried 4,030,337
Matt Caldwell 4,025,011

30 year old dispute resolved via ADR in Lagos

Lagos Chief Judge Opeyemi Oke: Lagos ADR resolves 30 year-old dispute

Lagos Chief Judge Opeyemi Oke: Lagos ADR resolves 30 year-old dispute

Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, said that a 30-year-old court case between two brothers was settled through mediation via the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse (LMDC) or Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR)

She did not give details about the brothers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oke disclosed this at the 2018 LMDC Neutrals Dinner held at Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday evening.

NAN reports that Lagos Settlement Week (LSW) is set aside by the state Chief Judge when disputants have opportunity to have their cases resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at no cost.

ADR, as used in law, is a way of resolving disputes between two or more parties with concrete effects. Typically, a third party, the mediator, assists the parties to negotiate a settlement.

The chief judge, during her speech at the neutrals (mediators) dinner, applauded the effects of LSW programme on the court dockets of Lagos State Judiciary.

“I applaud LMDC for the lives and families you save through the cases settled.

“I was informed of the December LSW programme, a 30-year-old court case was settled. This is the excellence we seek,” Oke said.

The chief judge also said although statistics vary, between 60 per cent and 80 per cent of cases referred to ADR were successfully resolved.

In her opening remark, the Acting Chairman of LMDC, Justice J. E. Oyefeso, said that Lagos judiciary was working hard to reposition LMDC to achieve greater results in 2019.

She said that ADR has helped to restore relationships between parties, adding that it has reduced dockets of cases in the courts.

Mrs Adeyinka Aroyewun, Director, Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse, said that LMDC would introduce new ideas in 2019 to accelerate mediation cases in the state.

She said that LMDC would organise more training for mediators to ensure specialisation among mediators so that mediators would only mediate on cases they specialised in.

She also said that efforts would be made to minimise factors responsible in low settlement of cases in mediation by introducing continuous assessment and evaluation of mediators.

“We will henceforth appoint mediators to handle cases in their areas of specialty.

“Age, tribe, religion and experience of every mediator will be taken into cognisance before a mediator is appointed.

“Also, number of cases in the dockets of a mediator will be considered before such mediator will be giving more case to handle,” Aroyewun said.

Alex Badeh: What Gov. Okowa said about murder of ex-Chief of Defence Staff

Published

on

The Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa on Wednesday condemned the killing of the immediate past Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh, retired Chief of Defence Staff.

Badeh, a four-star General of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), was shot dead on Tuesday along Abuja-Keffi expressway.

Okowa, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, described the assassination as an ‘unfortunate and terrible incident’.

He, therefore, urged security agencies to bring Badeh’s killers to book.

He tweeted, “The killing of former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh by unknown gunmen is quite unfortunate and a terrible news just like the case of General Idris Alkali who was abducted and later killed.

“I appeal to security agencies to work together and unmask those involved in the heinous crime that led to the death of the retired Defence Chief.

“Our country is being bedeviled by one manner of killings and abductions or the other. We never knew that it would deteriorate to a level where a former Chief of Defence Staff would be murdered in such a gruesome manner.

“It is my prayer and the prayers of all Deltans that the almighty God will give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”

Alex Badeh: Atiku reveals cause of ex-Defence chief’s death, tells Buhari what to do

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has said the assassination of former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh should be blamed on rising insecurity in the country.

Badeh, a four-star General of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), was shot dead on Tuesday along Abuja-Keffi Road.

Atiku, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said had gunmen not waylaid the vehicle in which Alex Badeh was travelling, he would not have sustained the gunshots and the health complications that terminated his life.

Abubakar said while Badeh’s death made headline news because of the personality involved, many ordinary Nigerians are either killed or maimed on a daily basis by rampaging armed robbers, kidnappers, herdsmen and hoodlums across the country.

The former vice president noted that the best tribute that President Muhammadu Buhari can pay to the late security chief is to ensure free and fair polls next year and return home to a well-deserved rest.

The statement read: “We cannot continue to pretend that all is well with the security system in our country, where armed robbers seem to be having a field day.

“It is, therefore, time to look at credible options, especially electing a more prepared candidate who will ensure that policemen and women are well equipped and motivated. Fortunately, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had shown what can be achieved when the police are provided with adequate resources and are well motivated.

“It is no longer news that during the 16 years when the PDP was in power, the nation boasted of the better motivated, best equipped and best-mobilized policemen in the country.

“We are shocked and saddened by the circumstances of the death Mr Badeh, an air chief marshal, whom was a fine officer, among the best of his time, one who never lost touch with officers and men despite holding several top positions in the nation’s military establishment.”

Abubakar further prayed that God will grant repose to Badeh’s soul and comfort those he left behind.
