Late Indian Politician Ananth Kumar

A minister in India’s federal cabinet and a senior leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) HN Ananth Kumar, died on Monday, party leaders said.

The six-term parliamentarian from Bangalore died at a cancer hospital in New Delhi, BJP spokesman S Shantaram said.

The 59-year-old had been minister for chemicals and fertilisers and for parliamentary affairs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government since 2014.

“Ananth Kumar Ji was an able administrator, who handled many ministerial portfolios and was a great asset to the BJP organisation,” Modi said in a Twitter post.

“He will always be remembered for his good work,’’ he said.

Kumar was the youngest minister when he held the civil aviation portfolio in the BJP-led coalition government headed by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Kumar joined the Hindu nationalist BJP in 1987 and steadily rose in the ranks to become a member of the national leadership of the party which claims to be the largest in the world with a membership of over 100 million.

He was credited with playing a key role in the party’s growth from scratch in southern India and in its coming to power in Karnataka state for the first time in 2008.

The Karnataka government declared a public holiday on Monday and three days of state mourning.

2019: Why local government financial autonomy is realisable – APC

Published

APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom State has insisted that local government financial autonomy proposed in the manifesto of its governorship candidate, Obong Nsima Ekere is realistic.

This was in reaction to the controversy and criticism by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that granting an autonomy to local government councils is an illusion “unless there would be constitutional amendment.”

The Spokesperson of the APC governorship campaign Organisation in Akwa Ibom, Honourable. Eseme Eyibo addressing journalists in Uyo on Tuesday, said anybody disputing the reality of financial autonomy of the local government does not have full grasp of philosophy of governance.

Hon Eyiboh, described the PDP’s position as an attempt to discredit the new vision of development being propounded by the APC governorship candidate.

According to him, “A lot of people in the Peoples Democratic party and some other people have argued that enforcement of local government autonomy is not possible unless there is constitutional amendment.

“They are clearly trying to discredit our principal, Obong Nsima Ekere, who is going to introduce rural development.”

He argued that making local governments the focal point of constitutional democracy as Ekere has promised was possible but required courage, understanding and appreciation of the requirements of the law and that it also required a man who has the capacity to differentiate between politics and governance.

“What our principal is saying is that because of his pedigree in public service career, he has been a deputy governor, the chairman of Akwa Ibom Investment Promotion Council and now the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

“He has promised to make the local government the focals of constitutional democracy, it requires courage, understanding and appreciation of the requirement of the law and of course it requires a man who has the capacity to differentiate between politics and governance,” Eyiboh said.

Eyiboh, who is also the Chairman of the Cross River Basin Development Authorities, said the argument by the PDP and other people doubting the possibility of triggering development in the local government is a mirage.

He further argued that if the 3 percent of the internally generated Revenue is remitted to the local government councils as stated in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria there would be healthy operations in the councils.

2019 election: Pharaoh let my people go – Agbaje blasts Tinubu

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, has described a National Leader of the All Progressives Cobgress, APC, Bolaji Ahmed Tinubu as “Pharoah.”

Agbaje was responding to Tinubu, who during the week, mocked him for adopting the ‘freedom’ slogan for his 2019 aspiration.

DAILY POST recalls that while addressing members of the APC on Monday, said, “Those who said they want freedom should go and learn tailoring and vulcanising and we will do freedom for them later.”

But in a statement on Tuesday, the PDP flag bearer likened Tinubu to the biblical Pharaoh of Egypt who refused to allow the children of Israel to leave.

His statement said, “Pharaoh, you must let our people go!

“Apparently, the APC leader has lost touch with reality.”

Agbaje’s statement was signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Felix Oboagwina.

“Otherwise, he would know that, like the children of Israel, Lagosians are groaning under the taskmaster that Tinubu and his cronies have turned themselves into in this state that should rate as Nigeria’s foremost,” he added.

Agbaje said Lagosians would be liberated after the people might have delivered an electoral disgrace to the APC in 2019.

He said, “We identify with our vulcanisers, tailors and all craftsmen who have the joy of duly-earned freedom after their apprenticeship.

“But it is apparent that, unlike them, those who have gotten used to filthy lucre and the dividends of corruption cannot savour the joy that comes with the legitimate sweat and labour of hardworking artisans.”
