Members of the House of Representatives have invited the acting Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka, Anambra Carol Arinze-Umobi over alleged poor project execution.
The VC’s invitation to appear before the House Committee on University Education was contained in a statement issued by the chairman of the committee, Abubakar Fulata, on Wednesday, August 14.
According to Fulata, the invitation is a sequel to the committee’s visit to UNIZIK in Awka.
He also clarified that the invitation was not to a witch-hunt on the VC but a fact-finding mission on the expected progress in the institutions’ project execution.
According to the chairman, the committee has discovered that the data presented by the VC are not in alignment with what they met on the ground during their visit.
Fulata said the committee wonders how the school’s management would claim to have generated N1.5 billion in 2023 but spent N3 billion from the same IGR.
Noting that spending funds without parliamentary appropriation was a gross violation of the Constitution, Fulata warned that the presentation of concocted figures undermines the integrity of the entire institution’s management.
He noted that some of the areas of concern include a 100 per cent payment for a project that was less than 40 per cent completed by the school management.
Fulata explained that this is against the nation’s financial regulations.
