The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has called on members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC to play their role in nation-building without bitterness and rancour.
Adeleke gave the charge to the Batch A Stream II corps members during the terminal parade and official closing ceremony of the orientation course at the permanent orientation camp, Ede on Tuesday.
He advised that bitterness and rancour were twin emotions capable of incapacitating and limiting them from achieving optimally in life.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Teslim Igbalaye, Adeleke assured the corps members that the government is very passionate about the scheme.
While calling on the corps members to embrace hard work, he urged them to discard the get rich quick syndrome, adding that government alone cannot bear the burden of nation-building but needs input from the corps members to move in the right direction.
“I want to assure you that the government is very passionate about you and that is why it keeps coming up with programmes and initiatives to help you actualize your dreams and harness fully, the potentials that are deeply rooted in you as graduate youths.
“But the government alone cannot do this; it needs input from you to help her move in the right direction. I want you, therefore, to embrace every initiative of government geared towards providing an enabling environment for you to thrive and bloom. Eject the ‘get rich quick’ syndrome and rather work hard and diligently towards becoming someone you, your family, society and the younger generation can be proud of.
The Osun governor admonished the corps members to relate well with their host communities and ensure a step down of the skills they have acquired in the orientation camp to the youths and adolescents in the communities.
According to him, this will help them to develop a positive mindset and self-esteem needed to keep them off the streets and gainfully employed.
He congratulated the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed on the scheme’s golden jubilee and implored all stakeholders and corps employers to continue to show love and hospitality to the corps members.
Earlier in his address, the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Agbor Ndoma Obim urged the corps members to focus more on what they can give to better the lives of the people of their host communities.
Agbor also advised them to discharge their duties at their places of primary assignment with a sense of duty and be committed to the ethics of the organisation they are posted to.
“Focus more on what you can give to better the lives of the people of your host communities. Be the Beacon of change and hope that you are meant to be to the people. As you have actively participated in the Orientation programme, I urge you to take the Primary Assignment and Community Development Service seriously. Your commitment and unalloyed participation in them will determine your participation in the fourth cardinal programme which is the winding up and passing out parade.
“Ensure you discharge your duties at your places of primary assignment with the utmost sense of duty and be committed to the ethics of the organization you are posted to. Do not be truant and avoid going late to your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA). Be a shining example and also, be a team player by contributing your quota to the success of the organization you are posted to and to the community development service group that you will belong to hereafter.”
The Osun NYSC boss also urged the corps members to be disciplined, resilient and committed to the project of nation-building.
