This was contained in a statement by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General and Chief Thompson Ohia, National Spokesman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
The move comes after over a decade of international diplomatic pressure from various United Nations-affiliated peace groups, urging advocates of Biafraโs self-determination to embrace peaceful negotiations.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo described the gesture as a โmiraculous momentโ in Nigeriaโs history, marking a profound turning point in the long-standing struggle over the โIgbo Question.โ
โOhanaeze Ndigbo proclaims that the acceptance by the Nonviolent Pro-Biafra Agitators to offer a dove of peace and a hand of friendship to the Federal Government is nothing short of miraculousโa pivotal moment in Nigeriaโs historical timeline.
โThis forthcoming dialogue is anticipated to mirror the earlier discussions held at Aburi, Ghana, now reborn as the โAbuja Accord.โ
โThis initiative aims explicitly to address and resolve the long-standing grievances that have birthed the Biafra agitation since the cessation of hostilities in the Nigerian Civil War in 1970,โ part of the statement read.
In their message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโs administration, the Nonviolent Pro-Biafra Agitators called for a constructive dialogue on these pressing issues, aiming to achieve a resolution that benefits not just the Igbo people but the entire nation.
Ohanaeze recognized the Presidentโs recent efforts to begin rebuilding Southeast infrastructure, offering a unique opportunity to address the concerns of the Biafra agitators through direct engagement.Nigerian cultural tours
Ohanaeze Ndigbo further stated that the Federal Government should seize this opportunity to address historical wrongs, particularly the underdevelopment of the Southeast, and work toward a peaceful, prosperous Nigeria.
Ohanaeze also noted that the peace initiative faces significant opposition from vested interests that profit from the regionโs instability. T
It said such groups, both within government and non-state actors, may resist any efforts towards true reconciliation as it would eliminate exploitative practices to continue.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged all stakeholders to engage in the talks with sincerity and resolve, for the future of the Igbo people and Nigeria at large.
The group further called on all parties involved to embrace this unique opportunity for peace, cooperation, and mutual respect.
โThe time has come to transcend our historical grievances and forge a united future, one characterized by peace, understanding, and shared prosperity,โ the statement concluded.
