The Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation has told chairmen of local government councils in the state to stop harassing commercial motorcyclists operating in their domains.
The chairman of the committee, Oludaisi Elemide, asked council chairmen to prevail on “unauthorised individuals harassing Okada riders in their council areas” under the guise of enforcing traffic rules and the use of crash helmets.
Elemide, who issued the warning Wednesday during a meeting with various motorcycle unions at the assembly complex in Abeokuta, said the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations remains the responsibility of the motor traffic division of the Nigeria Police, the state’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
“Government will not hesitate to hand over anyone caught harassing the riders to law enforcement agents,” he stressed.
The lawmaker explained that he was inundated with complaints from bike riders and their unions about the activities of miscreants who claimed to have been engaged by some local government councils.
