A governorship candidate in Anambra State, Chioma Grace Ifemeludike, has stirred mixed reactions online after sharing her campaign photos, which many Nigerians described as “too glamorous for politics.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate wrote; “I am the flag bearer of the African Action Congress and I’m proud to say that I’m the best candidate in the November 8 Anambra gubernatorial election. The lighthouse is about to be lit. #ChiomaForGovernor2025 #CourageForChange.”
While some users applauded her boldness and detailed manifesto, others criticized the tone and imagery of her campaign photos.
@AbassAdesola: “Na fashion show we wan do? You think governance is about taking fine pictures?”
@RereVonSchopfer: “I had to be sure this wasn’t a promotional post for a nightclub.”
“I like her courage, but the back shot isn’t necessary. We must present ourselves as serious contenders,” @SurvIsaacO said.
Others, however, defended her, saying her looks should not overshadow her message of reform and courage.
“Elections are close already, your manifesto should be doing the talking. I advice you engage the people more at d grassroots… It’s never an easy journey, my dear, but the Lord is your strength. I wish you well,” @wealthwize001 reacted.
Reacting to the online criticism, Ifemeludike posted another statement and campaign video on Wednesday, saying:
“Do not let them gaslight or confuse you. We can have beauty and brains in one body. Beauty and elegance are about courage, kindness, and intelligence. Ndi Anambra must vote for social change.”
In her video, the AAC candidate spoke about the challenges of being a woman in politics and her determination to confront political patriarchy.
“It’s been tough, but I have the ability, capability, and capacity to run this race with any gender,” she said.
“Many still believe a woman can’t lead, but what matters is good leadership and accountability.”
She urged Anambra voters to focus on competence, not gender or appearance.
“Beyond gender and age, Anambra must vote for a credible leader with empathy and integrity. Let’s reject vote buying, corruption, and violence.”
The Anambra governorship election will hold on November 8, 2025, with 16 candidates cleared by INEC.
Other top contenders include Charles Soludo (APGA), Ukachukwu Nicholas (APC), Ezenwafor Jude (PDP), Moghalu Nnadubem (Labour Party), and Nwosu Chuma (ADC).
