Nigeria Senate calls for the review of rising Data cost

By Adejumo Toluwanimi

In a move aimed at alleviating the financial burden on Nigerian citizens, the Nigeria Senate has called on the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to engage with telecommunications providers to review the recent increase in data costs.
This resolution followed a motion on the “Urgent Need to Address the Increased Cost of Data Services in Nigeria,” sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South) during plenary.

The Senate urged the ministry to develop a policy framework for affordable internet services in Nigeria. It also encouraged the federal government to establish and support tech hubs nationwide, providing free or subsidized internet access to young entrepreneurs, students, and innovators.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over rising data costs and their impact on the country’s economy.

Furthermore, the Senate mandated its Committee on Communications to investigate the factors driving the high cost of data and propose solutions for a sustainable and business-friendly telecommunications sector.

Senator Ekpenyong noted that telecommunications providers in Nigeria had recently increased data costs by as much as 200%, placing a significant financial strain on millions of Nigerians, particularly young people who rely on the internet for their livelihoods.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had approved the 50% tariff increase on calls, SMS, and internet data in January 2025, citing the need to address the widening gap between rising operational costs and stagnant tariffs. However, the move has been met with widespread criticism, with many arguing that it will disproportionately affect low-income households and small businesses.

The Senate’s call for a review of the tariff hike is a welcome development for many Nigerians, who have been struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. The move is seen as a step in the right direction, as it acknowledges the need to balance the interests of telecom operators with those of consumers.

Background to the Tariff Hike

The NCC’s decision to approve the 50% tariff hike was based on a request by telecom operators, who cited rising operational costs as a major challenge. The operators had sought a 100% tariff increase, but the NCC capped the hike at 50% in an effort to balance consumer protection with industry sustainability.

The tariff hike has been implemented despite concerns over its impact on the country’s economy. With inflation already at a high level, many Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet. The increased cost of telecom services is expected to further exacerbate the situation, making it difficult for people to access basic services like healthcare and education.

Finding Solutions

Ultimately, the goal should be to ensure that telecom services are affordable and accessible to all Nigerians. This will require a coordinated effort from the government, telecom operators, and other stakeholders.

As the Senate continues to review the tariff hike, it is essential that the interests of consumers are prioritized. The government must ensure that any decisions made are fair, transparent, and take into account the needs of all Nigerians.
