NEC Approves ₦17.5bn For 2025 Flood Mitigation

The National Executive Council has approved the disbursement of ₦17.5bn to strengthen response efforts against flooding across the country in 2025.

Of the total amount, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) secured ₦10bn for the 2025 flood response.

The decision followed a meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, according to a statement posted on the X handle of NEMA.

At the meeting, the Director General of the agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, presented an overview of the current status of flood incidents across the country.

Umar also provided a detailed briefing on NEMA’s flood preparedness strategy, ongoing risk assessments, early warning dissemination, and coordinated response mechanisms being implemented in anticipation of the 2025 flood season.

NEMA, in a statement, said that NEC approved the release of intervention funds to support nationwide flood mitigation and response efforts, following her presentation and subsequent deliberations on the urgent need for proactive measures.

According to the statement, the council also approved the disbursement of ₦3 billion each to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, ₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Environment, and ₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.

The NEMA DG assured that the agency would continue to work closely with state governments, relevant ministries, agencies, and partners to ensure a well-coordinated, timely, and people-centered flood response across the nation.

“Mrs. Zubaida Umar expressed profound appreciation to the Vice President and members of the Council for the timely and strategic intervention.

“She reaffirmed NEMA’s unwavering commitment to the efficient, transparent, and accountable utilisation of the allocated funds, in line with the agency’s mandate to safeguard lives and livelihoods during emergencies,” the statement added.
