Kano Allocates N2.9bn for NECO Fees for Underprivileged Students

The Kano State Government has approved the disbursement of N2,910,682,780 to cover the 2024 National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) fees for 119,903 underprivileged students who are unable to afford the expenses.

The state’s Commissioner of Education, Dr Umar Doguwa, revealed this development on Thursday during a media briefing in Kano. He clarified that any student who got at least four credits in any subject during the last qualifying examinations (mock) in the state would be eligible for registration.

Dr Doguwa emphasised that the decision stemmed from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s concern for students facing financial challenges, opting to prevent them from missing out on crucial educational opportunities.

The breakdown of the financial support include the government covering N24,250 for NECO and N21,000 for NBAIS per student. Dr Doguwa highlighted that while there was a proposal to subsidise fees only for students with eight credits, Governor Yusuf rejected it, preferring to extend the assistance to any student with four credits in any subject.
