July Hero” Brave Martyr Osman Hadi Laid to Rest Beside Bangladesh’s Rebel Poet

By Dhaka Correspondent, Bangladesh:

Brave martyr Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Manch and a July revolutionary, was laid to rest beside the grave of Bangladesh’s national and rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the Central Mosque Complex of the University of Dhaka. Hadi was given a final farewell before burial at around 3:30 pm on Saturday (December 20). Emotions ran high as mourners broke down in tears.

Earlier, following his funeral prayers at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Osman Hadi’s body was brought to the Central Mosque premises of the University of Dhaka for burial. A heart-rending scene unfolded as fellow comrades and members of the public wept openly. People ran behind the hearse, while some comrades even climbed onto the vehicle carrying the body.

After the funeral prayers concluded at 2:30 pm, the ambulance carrying the body of martyr Hadi set off for the University of Dhaka. Upon its arrival at the Central Mosque premises, many present were overwhelmed with grief. Attending the funeral were the Chief Adviser of the interim government, advisers and members of the Advisory Council, leaders of various political parties, heads of different state forces, foreign ambassadors, and people from all walks of life, who spontaneously joined the funeral prayers.

The body of the 34-year-old revolutionary was lowered into the grave by Mahmudur Rahman, Sadik Kayem, Hasnat Abdullah, and others. Once again, the area echoed with cries of grief as the martyr was laid to rest with tear-filled eyes and broken hearts.

Following the burial, prayers were led by Abu Bakar Siddiq, the elder brother of martyr Sharif Osman Hadi. The University of Dhaka campus grew heavy with sorrow as mourners wept and prayed fervently to Almighty Allah for their beloved comrade, as if each had lost a close family member.

Earlier, after the post-mortem examination at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital, Hadi’s body was taken to Manik Mia Avenue. The autopsy was completed at 11:45 am on Saturday, according to Dr Abdul Ahad, a resident physician of the Neurosurgery Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and member-secretary of the National Health Alliance (NHA).

On Friday, December 12, after Jummah prayers, Hadi was shot at point-blank range by terrorists of the now-banned Awami League while he was campaigning in the Kalvert Road area of Bijoy Nagar in the capital. At the time, Hadi was traveling in a rickshaw when the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and shot him directly in the head.

He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent initial surgery before being transferred to the ICU of Evercare Hospital. Later, on the family’s decision, he was taken to Singapore for advanced treatment. He breathed his last there on Thursday night (December 18) while undergoing treatment.

On Friday evening (December 19), Osman Hadi’s body arrived in Dhaka. From Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, his body was taken to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Since the mass uprising, Osman bin Hadi had emerged as a symbol of courage and patriotism for the younger generation reflected vividly in the massive crowds that gathered at Manik Mia Avenue.
