Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater empowerment of women and girls, describing it as a strategic investment in the nation’s future.
In a message to mark International Women’s Day 2026 on Sunday, Mrs Tinubu joined Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the achievements and contributions of women across the country.
“Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the strength, courage, tenacity, and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world,” she wrote on her X handle.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” the First Lady stressed that empowering women goes beyond charity and is central to national growth.
“This year’s theme reminds us that empowering women is not an act of charity; it is an investment in our collective future. When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice, and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities, and a more inclusive nation. When women rise, Nigeria rises!” she said.
Mrs Tinubu also extended her good wishes to women nationwide in celebration of the day.
Supporting the national call, Ondo State First Lady, Seun Aiyedatiwa, also urged women to continue uplifting one another and contributing positively to society
Speaking on the theme for this year on her Facebook page on Sunday, “Give to Gain,” she highlighted the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and acts of support in creating opportunities for future generations.
“This year’s theme reminds us of a powerful truth: when we give our time, knowledge, support, and love to uplift others, we create opportunities not only for them but for ourselves and for generations to come,” she said.
Aiyedatiwa commended women in Ondo State for their resilience and contributions across all sectors, from homes and communities to workplaces, classrooms, farms, markets, and boardrooms.
“Women in Ondo State have always been pillars of progress. From our markets to our farms, classrooms to boardrooms, and public service to entrepreneurship, you continue to shape the future with courage and determination,” she added.
The First Lady encouraged women to mentor and empower each other, stressing that such collaboration strengthens families, communities, and society as a whole.
“I encourage every woman today to lift another woman, support the dreams of young girls, and invest in the growth of our communities. When women empower one another, families prosper, communities thrive, and the entire state moves forward,” she said.
Both First Ladies concluded by celebrating women of all ages and backgrounds, reaffirming the pivotal role of women in shaping the nation’s present and future.
