HURIWA reacts as EFCC announces seizure of large foreign currencies at airport

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has reacted to the seizure of large foreign currencies from Nigerians at airports by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

HURIWA commended the Abdulrasheed Bawa-led EFCC for working hard to stop those that, according to it, are bent on destroying the value of the country’s national currency through currency speculation.

The group also demanded that the anti-graft body intensify its investigations around the massive heists of public funds in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

The rights group said the EFCC should not succumb to the blackmail of those it described as powerful forces within the National Assembly who want to undermine the clean financial reforms of the ‘ethically decadent NDDC.’

The EFCC Director of Operations, Abdulkarim Chukkol had recently announced the seizure of the large sum of foreign currency in Nigerian airports.

He went further to explain that the agency had been deploying its personnel to these airports for over ten years now to stop bulk cash movement out of the country.

HURIWA, through its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko described this move as an uncommon feat.

“The entire members of the organised civil rights advocacy community in Nigeria are thereby commending the Abdulrasheed Bawa-led EFCC for these milestones.

“We urge the EFCC to sustain the momentum of these intelligence-led operations to continue to arrest economic saboteurs,” HURIWA said.
